If you’re a digital musician who’s got hordes of sound sample files scattered all over your hard drive, this handy app will help you locate and audition them to find the ones you want to use in a project. It works kind of like an audio file browser, culling through your hard disk to find sound files (AIFF, AIFC, SDII, REX, and WAV formats supported), and then allowing you to play each file from within its easy-to-use interface. From there, you can flag all the desired files in the favorites directory and then simply import them from the directory to your audio sequencer of choice. It also has a BPM feature that will either guess the beats-per-minute in a drum loop or song sample for you, or let you tap out the beats of the rhythm on its BPM Tap Pad to manually determine the tempo.

Feel like jamming, but don’t have a guitar (or talent)? This nifty app lets you pump out some cool blues guitar riffs at the push of a button, accompanied by drums and bass. Plus, the little visual element adds to your jamming experience. You can even tell the “band” to take a hike and fly solo, and they won’t throw things at you. Best of all, it’s fun, and it’s free—our favorite kind of app.
Requirements: G3 or faster Mac, Mac OS X 10.2 or later
One thing that we miss about digital music is holding the cool album art in our grubby little hands. This awesome little app allows you to almost do just that. Clutter allows you to stockpile CD cover art on your Mac desktop, and play any of these CDs with a simple double-click in iTunes. Clutter trolls through Amazon.com to find cover art for all of your iTunes-converted CDs—or paste in your own cover art—and stack or stagger the graphics on your desktop for easy play access.
